Este lectura un obicei v\u0103t\u0103m\u0103tor? Ce leg\u0103tur\u0103 exist\u0103 \u00eentre citit \u015fi moarte ?<br \/>\nFire\u015fte, ca filosof stoic, Marcus Aurelius citise diatriba \u00een contra c\u0103r\u0163ilor \u015fi lecturii din scrierile lui Seneca. Dar Seneca \u00ee\u015fi argumentase dispre\u0163ul. A r\u0103sfoi multe c\u0103r\u0163i este o form\u0103 de agita\u0163ie nedemn\u0103 de un filosof. Cine face filosofie se afl\u0103 \u00een c\u0103utarea lini\u015ftii \u015fi a senin\u0103t\u0103\u0163ii. \u00cen fond, pe principiul \u201enon multa sed multum\u201c, Lucius Annaeus Seneca nu blameaz\u0103 lectura \u00een sine, ci obiceiul amicului s\u0103u Lucilius de a frunz\u0103ri c\u0103r\u0163ile, f\u0103r\u0103 a se opri asupra uneia dintre ele.<br \/>\n\u00cen schimb, Marcus Aurelius este mult mai sever. El pare a condamna Cartea, nu c\u0103r\u0163ile. \u00cemi vine greu s\u0103 \u00een\u0163eleg aversiunea lui. Contexul nu este l\u0103muritor. Marcus Aurelius scrie (C\u0103tre sine, II: 3, traducere de M. Peucescu \u015fi D. Burtea): \u201eTot ce se petrece \u00een univers este o dovad\u0103 c\u0103 exist\u0103 o providen\u0163\u0103 divin\u0103. Tot ceea ce aparent vine de la soart\u0103 sau de la \u00eent\u00eemplare nu se petrece \u00een afara naturii, ci este urmarea unei urzeli \u015fi a unei \u00eenl\u0103n\u0163uiri de cauze, r\u00eenduit\u0103 de providen\u0163\u0103. Toate curg dintr-un astfel de izvor&#8230;\u201c.<br \/>\n\u015ei apoi, la sf\u00eer\u015fitul \u00eensemn\u0103rii, aproape f\u0103r\u0103 leg\u0103tur\u0103 cu introducerea: \u201eAcestea s\u0103-\u0163i fie de ajuns, de vreme ce s\u00eent principii esen\u0163iale. \u00cenl\u0103tur\u0103 deci setea de c\u0103r\u0163i, ca s\u0103 nu mori c\u00eertind, ci dimpotriv\u0103, cu adev\u0103rat mul\u0163umit, senin \u015fi recunosc\u0103tor din toat\u0103 inima zeilor\u201c.<br \/>\n\u00cenceputul notei ne asigur\u0103 c\u0103 exist\u0103 o providen\u0163\u0103 \u015fi o ordine \u00een toate cele. Totul e guvernat de necesitate. Sf\u00eer\u015fitul reprezint\u0103 o condamnare f\u0103r\u0103 apel a c\u0103r\u0163ilor. Care e leg\u0103tura dintre \u00eenceput \u015fi sf\u00e2r\u015fit? Aparent (\u015fi nu numai), nici una. Saltul este prea mare. Lumea se supune providen\u0163ei. Deci \u00eenl\u0103tur\u0103 setea de c\u0103r\u0163i. Non sequitur, ar fi exclamat filosofii medievali. Concluzia nu urmeaz\u0103 din premise.<br \/>\nNici versiunea francez\u0103 a fragmentului nu ne ajut\u0103. Iat\u0103 cum traduce pasajul \u00een cauz\u0103 Mario Meunier: \u201eLes oeuvres des Dieux sont pleines de providence; celles de la Fortune ne se font pas sans la nature ou sans \u00eatre fil\u00e9es et tiss\u00e9es avec les \u00e9v\u00e9nements que dirige la Providence. Tout d\u00e9coule de l\u00e0&#8230; Que cela te suffise et te serve de principes. Quant \u00e0 ta soif de livres, rejette-la, afin de ne pas mourir en murmurant, mais v\u00e9ritablement apais\u00e9 et le coeur plein de gratitude envers les Dieux\u201c. Nu exist\u0103 nicio divergen\u0163\u0103 \u00eentre traduceri. \u015ei \u00een rom\u00e2n\u0103, \u015fi \u00een francez\u0103, sensul pasajului este acela\u015fi&#8230; Este posibil ca editorii \u00eensemn\u0103rilor \u00eemp\u0103ratului Marcus Aurelius s\u0103 fi pus la un loc dou\u0103 fragmente diferite. Este la fel de posibil (ba chiar probabil) ca \u00eensu\u015fi \u00eemp\u0103ratul s\u0103 fi s\u0103rit de la una la alta, din grab\u0103 ori neaten\u0163ie. Totu\u015fi, \u00een nota care precede pasajul II: 3, Marcus Aurelius spusese acela\u015fi lucru (C\u0103tre sine, II: 2): \u201e\u00cenl\u0103tur\u0103 c\u0103r\u0163ile, nu te l\u0103sa h\u0103r\u0163uit de griji. Nu \u0163i-a fost dat \u015f\u00eeng\u0103duit\u0163, ci din moment ce e\u015fti deja h\u0103r\u0103zit mor\u0163ii, dispre\u0163uie\u015fte cele ale c\u0103rnii&#8230;\u201c.\u00a0 \u015ei, la r\u00eendul lui, Mario Meuner, \u00een edi\u0163ia de la defuncta Librairie Garnier Fr\u00e8res: \u201eRenonce aux livres; ne te laisse pas absorber: ce ne t\u2019est point permis. Mais, comme un homme d\u00e9j\u00e0 en passe de mourir, m\u00e9prise la chair\u201c. S\u0103 re\u0163inem deocamdat\u0103 faptul c\u0103 filosoful Marcus Aurelius nu a iubit prea mult c\u0103r\u0163ile. Dar nu cred c\u0103 a fost un bibliofob veritabil.<br \/>\nA\u015fadar:\u00a0 \u201e\u00cenl\u0103tur\u0103 setea de c\u0103r\u0163i, ca s\u0103 nu mori c\u00eertind!\u201c.<br \/>\nC\u00e2nd Marcus Aurelius noteaz\u0103 acest \u00eendemn ciudat (cel pu\u0163in pentru cititorul de ast\u0103zi), el se g\u00eende\u015fte, de fapt, la un singur om: la el \u00eensu\u015fi. \u00cemp\u0103ratul nu a inten\u0163ionat niciodat\u0103 s\u0103 scrie o carte propriu-zis\u0103, precum Seneca, precum prietenul Fronto. \u015ei cu at\u00eet mai pu\u0163in s\u0103 o publice.<br \/>\n\u00censemn\u0103rile lui au avut din capul locului un singur destinatar. \u015ei acest destinatar nu a fost altul dec\u00e2t Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus. N-a voit s\u0103 fie \u00eenv\u0103\u0163\u0103torul altcuiva. N-a sf\u0103tuit pe nimeni. A scris pentru sine, a\u015fa cum arat\u0103 titlul medita\u0163iilor sale: Ta eis heauton: C\u0103tre mine \u00eensumi.<br \/>\nScria noaptea, \u00een pu\u0163inul timp r\u0103mas liber, pe c\u00eempul de lupt\u0103, \u00een cortul de osta\u015f, luminat precar, \u00een lungile \u015fi obositoarele campanii purtate la grani\u0163ele imperiului, prin \u201e\u0163ara quazilor, pe malul r\u00eeului Granua\u201c (adic\u0103 \u00een Panonia de azi), cum precizeaz\u0103 \u00eentr-un r\u00e2nd (C\u0103tre sine, I: 17), prin \u0163inuturile triburilor germanice, \u00een Galia ori \u00een Asia Mic\u0103. Nu a avut deloc vanitate de autor. Vreme de mai bine de un mileniu, lucrarea lui a fost foarte pu\u0163in cunoscut\u0103.<br \/>\nObserva\u0163iile \u00eemp\u0103ratului, scrise \u00een limba greac\u0103 (\u015fi nu \u00een latin\u0103), \u00eentre anii 170 \u015fi 180, au fost tip\u0103rite abia \u00een 1558, dup\u0103 un manuscris azi pierdut.<br \/>\nPrin urmare, \u00eendemnul \u201e\u00cenl\u0103tur\u0103 setea de c\u0103r\u0163i, ca s\u0103 nu mori c\u00eertind!\u201c este adresat numai \u015fi numai sie\u015fi. El poate fi interpretat, desigur, \u00een multe feluri.<br \/>\nAr fi, mai \u00eent\u00eei, strig\u0103tul de exasperare al unui cititor p\u0103tima\u015f, care \u00een\u0163elege dintr-o dat\u0103 pu\u0163inul folos adus de c\u0103r\u0163i. Ar reprezenta astfel un repro\u015f adresat omului care cite\u015fte \u00een loc s\u0103 fie. Repro\u015ful este perfect stoic. Senin\u0103tatea, apatheia nu se ob\u0163in prin r\u0103sfoirea c\u0103r\u0163ilor, ci prin exerci\u0163iu spiritual, prin medita\u0163ie asidu\u0103, r\u0103bd\u0103toare la via\u0163\u0103, finitudine, faim\u0103, putere, moarte etc.<br \/>\nAr fi, \u00een al doilea r\u00e2nd, o respingere a unui soi de c\u0103r\u0163i cu mare trecere \u00een secolul lui Marcus Aurelius: scrierile autorilor sofistici \u015fi neserio\u015fi. S\u0103 ne amintim c\u0103 amicul \u015fi profesorul lui, retorul Marcus Cornelius Fronto, a redactat o Laus fumi et pulveris, dar \u015fi o Laus neglegentiae, lucr\u0103ri frivole \u015fi de amuzament. \u015ei aceast\u0103 respingere este perfect stoic\u0103.
