Limba \u00een care ne-am n\u0103scut, limba \u00eent\u00e2ielor noastre accept\u0103ri \u015fi lumin\u0103ri, limba min\u0163ilor noastre este tot at\u00e2t de mult \u015fi de central a noastr\u0103 pe c\u00e2t sunt de neschimbat ale noastre trupuri de carne, os \u015fi amintire pe care le-am adus cu noi pe alte meleaguri. (&#8230;) De ce ar reprezenta garan\u0163ia unor fapte majore o minte divizat\u0103 \u00een care limbajul interior, \u00een care vis\u0103m, ne \u00eencuraj\u0103m sau mustr\u0103m, \u015fi limbajul exterior pe care \u00eel adres\u0103m semenilor no\u015ftri nu sunt \u00een raport de continuitate? O minte pentru care cea de a doua limb\u0103, limba \u00een care simul\u0103m c\u0103 g\u00e2ndim \u015fi sim\u0163im, nu mai reprezint\u0103, ca \u00een cazul limbii materne, substan\u0163a \u015fi forma ei deopotriv\u0103, ci un dat artificial, cu care g\u00e2ndul \u00eenchegat rom\u00e2ne\u015fte trebuie confruntat \u015fi acordat. Artificial\u0103 ca deprindere, temei de scindare, o limb\u0103 \u00abmajor\u0103\u00bb nu este, pentru cel care nu s-a n\u0103scut \u00een ea garan\u0163ia unei crea\u0163ii majore. Ideea c\u0103 o carte citit\u0103 de mul\u0163i e o carte major\u0103 pe c\u00e2nd cea citit\u0103 de mai pu\u0163ini e o carte minor\u0103 nu e, nici ea, de acceptat pe de-a-ntregul. Sunt at\u00e2t de multe c\u0103r\u0163i citite de un num\u0103r uria\u015f de oameni care nu au nicio valoare. Sunt at\u00e2tea c\u0103r\u0163i care, publicate la \u00eenceput \u00een tiraje minuscule, \u015fi-au f\u0103cut drum. Sunt at\u00e2tea c\u0103r\u0163i pe care majoritatea oamenilor refuz\u0103 s\u0103 le citeasc\u0103. De ce s\u0103 nu arm\u0103m impecabil lucr\u0103ri pe care le destin\u0103m, dac\u0103 nu celor cu care convie\u0163uim, celor care ar putea s\u0103 ne urmeze?\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>Limba rom\u00e2n\u0103 fiind ignorat\u0103 ca limb\u0103 romanic\u0103 \u00een departamentele de specialitate din S.U.A., Sanda Golopen\u0163ia tr\u0103ie\u015fte cu extrem\u0103 \u00eengrijorare starea limbii materne. \u201e\u00cen exil, \u2013 a scris c\u00e2ndva \u2013 \u00een fiecare zi, moare limba \u00een noi\u201c. A cercetat rela\u0163ia emigran\u0163ilor rom\u00e2ni cu limba matern\u0103 \u015fi a extins observa\u0163iile asupra vorbitorilor ei, oriunde se afl\u0103 ei, \u00een cartea Rom\u00e2na global\u0103 (2009).<\/p>\n<p>Cultura rom\u00e2n\u0103 \u201enu este neap\u0103rat o cultur\u0103 mic\u0103\u201c, a sus\u0163inut \u00een numeroase pagini publicate \u00een reviste de peste hotare, \u00een care a scris despre Institutul Social Rom\u00e2n, Emil Cioran, \u015ecoala de cercetare sociologic\u0103 de la Bucure\u015fti, \u015etefania Cristescu-Golopen\u0163ia, George Bacovia, Constantin Br\u0103iloiu, H. Tiktin, Vintil\u0103 Horia, Henri Wald, Monica Br\u0103tulescu \u015f.a.<\/p>\n<p>Invitat\u0103 s\u0103 conferen\u0163ieze la numeroase universit\u0103\u0163i din str\u0103in\u0103tate, \u015fi-a ales de multe ori teme rom\u00e2ne\u015fti: cinci conferin\u0163e, \u00een 1966, despre gramatica transforma\u0163ional\u0103 a limbii rom\u00e2ne la Facult\u00e9 des Sciences, Universit\u00e9 de Paris, despre proverbele rom\u00e2ne\u015fti, \u00een 1970, la The University of Chicago, despre scrisorile de dragoste la Breb-Maramure\u015f, \u00een 1983, la International Center for Semiotics and Linguistics, Urbino, Italia, despre filosofia stilului la Lucian Blaga, \u00een 1995, la The Romanian Cultural Center, New York, despre desc\u00e2ntecele de la Cornova-Basarabia, la Funda\u0163ia \u201eIuliu Maniu\u201c, New York, \u00een 1997, despre Eugen Ionescu, \u00een 2004, la The Romanian Cultural Center, New York, \u00een 2004, despre Cimitirul vesel de la S\u0103p\u00e2n\u0163a, la acela\u015fi centru cultural, \u00een fine lecturile f\u0103cute din c\u0103r\u0163ile sale Cartea plec\u0103rii \u015fi Emigran\u0163ii Carter, \u00een 2012, la Asocia\u0163ia Rom\u00e2nilor din New England.<\/p>\n<p>S-a exprimat critic c\u00e2nd a constatat c\u0103 o parte sau alta a culturii rom\u00e2ne a fost minimalizat\u0103 \u00een publica\u0163ii ap\u0103rute \u00een str\u0103in\u0103tate. \u00cen articolul Derealizare (din Lupta, 15 mai 1988), se arat\u0103 nemul\u0163umit\u0103 de spa\u0163iul pe care l-a acordat Mircea Eliade, adic\u0103 o jum\u0103tate de pagin\u0103, filosofiei rom\u00e2ne\u015fti \u00een Encyclopedia of Philosophy, de Paul Edwards (1967), \u00een condi\u0163iile \u00een care filosofia vecinilor no\u015ftri se bucura de un alt tratament: patru pagini de text \u015fi 25 trimiteri bibliografice, cea iugoslav\u0103, o pagin\u0103 de text \u015fi trei trimiteri bibliografice, cea bulgar\u0103, o pagin\u0103 \u015fi jum\u0103tate \u015fi 17 trimiteri bibliografice, cea ungar\u0103, \u201ede trei ori mai mult dec\u00e2t la Mircea Eliade\u201c. Faptul c\u0103 Mircea Eliade s-a exprimat, scriind amintita prezentare, \u00eentr-o macrocultur\u0103 nu scuz\u0103 parcimonia textului s\u0103u. \u201eA ridica \u00een fa\u0163a filosofiei rom\u00e2ne\u015fti un prag practic de netrecut pentru oricare filosofie european\u0103, \u2013 scrie Sanda Golopen\u0163ia \u2013, \u015fi aceasta \u00een Occident, unde cu condi\u0163ia de a lupta pentru ea exist\u0103 o sensibil mai mare libertate de expresie dec\u00e2t oriunde altundeva \u00een acest moment, nu e o dovad\u0103 de obiectivitate, ci de \u00eenstr\u0103inare\u201c. Ea \u00eens\u0103\u015fi a uzat de toate posibilit\u0103\u0163ile ce i s-au creat pentru cunoa\u015fterea literaturii rom\u00e2ne. Un exemplu \u00een acest sens este \u015fi colaborarea la An Encyclopedia of Continental Women Writers (New York and London, 1991), unde a publicat 32 de articole despre Floren\u0163a Albu, Ticu Archip, Maria Banu\u015f, Ana Blandiana, Constan\u0163a Buzea, Nina Cassian, Otilia Cazimir, Sofia Cocea, Denisa Com\u0103nescu, Ioana Cr\u0103ciunescu, Daniela Cr\u0103snaru, Sarmiza Cretzianu, Matilda Cugler-Poni, Constan\u0163a Dunca-Schiau, Elena Farago, Maria Flechtenmacher, Iulia Hasdeu, Magda Isanos, Monica Lovinescu, Lucia Mantu, Veronica Micle, Margarita Miller-Verghi, Claudia Millian Minulescu, Sanda Movil\u0103, Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu, Veronica Porumbacu, Cella Serghi, Smara, Henriette Yvonne Stahl, Margareta Sterian, Ileana Vulpescu \u015fi Adela Xenopol.<\/p>\n<p>Profesoara care la Brown University, a \u0163inut, pe l\u00e2ng\u0103 cursurile de semiotic\u0103 \u015fi lingvistic\u0103, \u015fi cursuri despre teatrul francez, romanul francez din a doua jum\u0103tate a secolului al XX-lea \u015fi despre critica \u015fi istoria literar\u0103 francez\u0103 a aceluia\u015fi secol, l-a propus, \u00een 1984, pe Eug\u00e8ne Ionesco pentru decernarea titlului de Doctor Honoris Causa al amintitei universit\u0103\u0163i, prilej cu care marele dramaturg a conferen\u0163iat, \u00een fa\u0163a a vreo 2000 de studen\u0163i \u015fi profesori, despre \u201eYalta \u015fi consecin\u0163ele ei, care i-a uluit pe mul\u0163i \u015fi cred c\u0103 le-a r\u0103mas de ne\u015fters \u00een memorie\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>Cele mai multe c\u0103r\u0163i i-au ap\u0103rut, \u00een \u0163ar\u0103, dup\u0103 1990: Cartea plec\u0103rii (1995), America, America (1996), Desire Machines. Scrisori primite \u015fi trimise de Anton Golopen\u0163ia (I-IV, 2004\u20132014), foarte bogat\u0103 surs\u0103 documentar\u0103 pentru cunoa\u015fterea activit\u0103\u0163ii at\u00e2t a tat\u0103lui s\u0103u, c\u00e2t \u015fi, \u00eentr-un plan mai larg, a \u015fcolii de cercetare sociologic\u0103 de la Bucure\u015fti. A descoperit, printr-un noroc, ceea ce a mai r\u0103mas din cercetarea f\u0103cut\u0103 de o echip\u0103, condus\u0103 de Anton Golopen\u0163ia, \u00eentre decembrie 1941 \u015fi februarie 1944, la rom\u00e2nii a\u015feza\u0163i \u00eentre Bug \u015fi Done\u0163 \u015fi a tip\u0103rit, \u00een 2006, \u00een dou\u0103 masive volume, lucrarea Anton Golopen\u0163ia, Rom\u00e2nii de la est de Bug.
